Galena has been a Midwest getaway for decades. In fact, the first hotel opened in 1855. On a recent visit we stayed at 2015 Bed & Breakfast winner Farmer’s Guest House. The beautiful, historic inn is located just blocks away from downtown Galena. Our well-lit, but hidden path was flanked by fragrant lilacs.
Main Street offered fun shopping, eating and first-class wine tasting. There were so many treasures to choose from and carry back to our room.
But further up Main Street was a true gem at Galena Clay Works we found several creative pieces at this neighborhood pottery barn where payment is on the honor system.
The sweet ending to our visit was served by Breakfast Diva and inn owner Susan Steffan. The Food Network contestant created sweet French toast with caramel sauce with savory fresh pork sausage. Her cookies were delicious also and made a great snack on the road! We’ve already planned our return trip!
Great post
Thanks!
Love it – I’ve stayed at Farmer’s Guest House two times and by far my favorite there in Galena. There used to be a Hollywood link to the Farmer’s Guest House – The Field of Dreams was filmed nearby in Dyersville and Galena was used as the town where the Dr. was found (if you didn’t already know that). While they were looking for Dr. Archibald, James Earl Jones was filmed standing next to a bar talking to locals. The bar, at one time, was owned by the Farmer’s Guest House. Not sure they still have it because they have remodeled since. I actually have a picture somewhere of my wife and I standing next to it. Pretty cool. Thanks for sharing your visit.
